Heartfelt and often humorous recollections of a Catholic girlhood and working in theatre are interwoven in my memoir Mirror Talk. Here is an excerpt.

I auditioned for a part in a Polish play that had been smuggled from behind the Iron Curtain.  The playwright's description of the character I played was "voluptuous and extraverted."  I weighed ninety-eight pounds and was so shy my thoughts trembled.  "I'm casting you against type," the director told me, adding, "The character you play represents man's inhumanity to man."

CASTLE CATS

On the stone steps near the kitchen,

above the grotto, a trio of grey cats

snuggle in the smell of what cook

is preparing for guests.  Nearby,

a striped kitten sits undecided

while a slim black cat

jumps beside a rose bush.

Rubbing, purring and roaming,

similar cats conspire in the courtyard.

Mousers, each one of them;

felines, efficient at killing –

affectionate, sensual, warm,

enjoying the Tuscan sun.
